The Philippines is the third largest English-speaking
country in the world. The country is divided into three geographical
areas: The capital and gateway, Manila, a large sprawling
city by the bay, is situated in Luzon, the major northern
island. Visayas form the central islands and Mindanao in the
south. It has 14 regions, 73 provinces and 60 cities.
The Philippines is actually an archipelago
of over 7,100 islands. It stretches north from the tip of
Borneo into the South China Sea. The country has over a hundred
ethnic groups with a mixture of foreign influences which have
molded a unique Filipino culture.
Culture
Beneath the layer of Spanish and American
heritage lies a rich underlay of Malay culture. National cultural
life is a happy marriage of many influences, as the indigenous
Malay culture is assimilated and adapted to different strains
in a practice typical of Malay temperament.
Perhaps because of their Spanish influence,
there is a Latin passion about the Filipino which reflects
in their legendary Hospitality, known through out South East
Asia; or perhaps it is because they are Filipino!
Whatever the reason, the Filipino has a reputation through
out the world of supplying a diverse range of labour skills
to be found in almost all professions.
Migration
The Government assists and regulates migration
which adds considerable income as funds from overseas workers
are remitted back home.
Employment and recruitment agencies are strictly regulated
to insure that best practices are employed, the rights of
its migrant work force are protected and thus it safeguards
the substantial income derived from these remittances.
Remittances
Besides easing unemployment, Filipinos who
work abroad remit regular foreign earnings and contribute
largely to the Philippine economy.
At the time of writing, current figures (2006) are unavailable
though expected to be in excess of $10 billion US dollars.
Language
Most Filipinos speak Filipino, the national
language; and English, the language for commercial and legal
transactions. The Philippines is the world's third largest
English-speaking country, after the United States and the
United Kingdom. Literacy rate is a high 96%.
Education
Philippine education follows largely the
American system.
English is the common language used through out the government
and private colleges and Universities.
In general 6 years of primary education
is followed by 4 years of secondary education.
College education often comprises a 4-5
year program with certain cases as in Medical and Law, as
long as 8 years. Graduate courses can add an additional 2-4
years.
